One of the most significant trends in 20th-century drama was the rise of realism. Realism emerged as a reaction against the romanticism of the previous century, with playwrights seeking to portray life as it is, rather than as it ought to be. This style of drama was marked by its attention to detail and its emphasis on social issues, with plays addressing topics such as poverty, class struggle, and the impact of war on everyday life.
