Alis: One of the most important minor  character of the novel is Hyder Ali, the neighbour and landlord of  Das family. It is the first part of the novel that we hear his name for the first time during the conversation between Tara and Bim.  Tara talks  about the  time when  Bim and  Raja played  on the  banks of   the  river. Bim  on this replies thinking: “And the white horse riding by, Hyder Ali Sahib up on it, high above us, and his peon running in front of him,shouting, and his dog behind barking?’ She laughed quite excitedly, seeing  it again, this half-remembered picture.
