Iii. Criteria for classification of consonants

Place of articulation
The place of articulation of a consonant is determined by the passive articulator that is involved in its production. It is for this reason that the sound is also named after the passive articulator.

  1. Bilabial : those consonants in the articulatio of which the upper and lower lips are involved. For example the initial sounds in the English words, post, boast, meal , win
  2. Labio-dental : Those consonants in the production of which the active articulator is the lower lip and the passive articulator is the upper teeth. The initial consonants in the English words, fate, and vow are labio-dental consonants.
