Contribution of language to the total effect of Huckleberry Finn

MEG-06

AMERICAN LITERATURE ASSIGNMENT 2017-2018 (Based on Blocks 1-9)
Course Code: MEG-06/2017-18 Max. Marks: 100

2. How does language contribute to the total effect of Huckleberry Finn

Language In Huckleberry Finn: Mark Twain made use of colloquial language for serious literature, and the kind  of purpose  it has achieved  is quite  evident in  Huckleberry Finn.  Let us now  compare the  language of Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter and Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. One of the most remarkable differences between the two is that Hawthorne makes use of standard British English of elegance. He does not use the language used by common people in his everyday speech. While Twain makes use of spoken language and that too in a dialect which was not considered as respectable. With such use of language he achieves higher literary  purposes. And it is  this use of language,  which becomes one of  the most interesting and delightful aspect of it.

Course Code: MEG-06/2017-18 Max. Marks: 100

  1. Comment briefly on the attitude of the puritans to literature in the nineteenth
    century.

The Literary Genres of The Puritans: It is interesting to know that the non-instantaneous style of puritan writing crossed the boundaries of their pulpit and  devotional paeans and entered into the other discourses as well. This can be apparently seen the writings of historians such as William Bradford, who was a first generation puritan immigrant, and Cotton Mather, a  third generation puritan immigrant. In these writing  one can clearly identify the need to reach out to every reader.
In the 17th  century many writers  chronicled the intertwining  of the individual  and collective experiences of New England’s Puritans.

Poetry is an escape from personality- Eliot

MEG – 05: Literary Criticism & Theory ASSIGNMENT 2017 - 2018
(Based on Blocks (1 – 8)

Assignment code: BEGA001/TMA/2017-18 Maximum Marks: 100

  1. Would you agree with Eliot that poetry is an escape from personality? Discuss.

In “Tradition  and the Individual  Talent,” T.S. Eliot describes  the basis for  what poetry is in  a way that seems inappropriate when  applied to most writers.  “Poetry is not a turning  loose of emotion, but  an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality.” His theory implies that poets only write to remove themselves from their day to day emotions. Eliot says that emotion has nothing to do with a poet’s work.

Let us consider for a moment someone who writes a poem about his or her deep love or infatuation for another person.

MEG – 05: Literary Criticism & Theory ASSIGNMENT 2017 - 2018
(Based on Blocks (1 – 8)

Assignment code: BEGA001/TMA/2017-18 Maximum Marks: 100

  1. Does Aristotle’s schema of the elements of tragedy have any relevance today? Comment.

Most of theories about art and theatre have taken place from the place from the Aristotelian classification of elements of tragedy, even modernist picks up few points from it. This makes Aristotelian scheme of elements of tragedy an important aspect in the understanding of modern theatre and by extension art. The Six Elements of Tragedy: Although we are going to look at all the six elements of tragedy separately, but one thing should be noted that these elements act like a unity when on the stage and that the separate looking is only for the sake of analysis. WhenAristotle talks about them classifying into internal and external, then also it is only for the sake of  convenience in analyzing  it. Another thing should be  noted about these elements  that they are  not as obvious as visual  auditory content of  theatre, and also  that none of these  elements is more  important than other. People often take myth as more important for Aristotle calls it as ‘soul of tragedy’, but it is not the case

Longinus' theory of the Sublime

MEG 05: Literary Criticism & Theory ASSIGNMENT 2017 - 2018
(Based on Blocks (1 – 8)

Assignment code: BEGA001/TMA/2017-18 Maximum Marks: 100

  1. Comment of Longinus' theory of the Sublime

Longinus critically praises and blames literary works as examples of good or bad styles of writing. Longinus ultimately promotes an “elevation of style” and an essence of “simplicity”. Longinus describes it thus, “the first and most important source  of sublimity [is]  the power of  forming great conceptions.” The  concept of the  sublime is generally accepted to refer to a style of writing that elevates itself “above the ordinary”. Finally, Longinus sets out five sources of sublimity: great thoughts, strong emotions, certain figures of thought and speech, noble diction, and dignified word arrangement. Not all of the medieval scholars agreed with Boethius who was known for his disdain for poetry and which was the result of the medieval theology  and philosophy. One such scholar would be Thomas Aquinas, who  was also a great critic and whose ideas influenced scholars like Dante Alighieri.

A standard language may be defined either as a language variety used by a population for public purposes or as a variety that has undergone standardization.
