Why is language planning essential in any country and What are the factors which influence language planning?

MEG – 04: ASPECTS OF LANGUAGE
ASSIGNMENT 2018 - 2019
(Based on Blocks (1 - 9)
          Max. Marks: 100

2. Why is language planning essential in any country? What are the factors which influence language planning?

“Language planning is deliberate language change; that is; changes in the systems of language code or speaking or both that are planned by organizations that are established for such purposes or given a mandate to fulfill such purposes. As such, language planning is focused on problem-solving and is characterized by the formulation and evaluation of alternatives for solving language problems to find the best (or optimal, most efficient) decisions” __Rubin and Jernudd

Language planning is one of the dimensions of language in use. In complex multilingual societies, language planning assumes an even more important role since minority languages and other marginalized languages must be given a certain space. In general terms, planning is concerned with deliberately achieving some objective through the utilization of resources in a consciously controlled way. The concept of planning has, however, been a subject of considerable debate.

Types of Negation and its interaction with Scope

MEG – 04: ASPECTS OF LANGUAGE
ASSIGNMENT 2018 - 2019
(Based on Blocks (1 - 9)
          Max. Marks: 100

d. Types of Negation and its interaction with Scope

Negation, in logic, is a one-place operator that converts a true proposition into a false one and a false proposition into a true one. In English syntax, any one of the elements no, not, -n’t, never, neither....nor, nowhere, whereas Scope is a semantic property specifying the domain of interpretation of an expression such as an adverb or a quantifier, often relative to another such expression; scope is resolved at the level of LF( Logical Form)

Negation in English is a fascinating area of study, precisely because it plays a central role in affecting both the structure and the total meaning of a sentence at the same time. The term negation is used to cover words such as the  utterance no, not and the contraction -n’t, the negative indefinite pronouns nothing, nobody, the adjectives no (as in no one or no money), the adverbs nowhere , never, and the conjunctions neither...nor.

The notion of a Speech Community

MEG – 04: ASPECTS OF LANGUAGE
ASSIGNMENT 2018 - 2019
(Based on Blocks (1 - 9)
          Max. Marks: 100

C. The notion of a Speech Community

Speech community refers to a group of people who form a community, eg. a village, a region, a nation, and who have at least one speech variety in common.

From the definition of speech community, it is clear that there is a general belief that each language defines and delimits a speech community. So, the general equation that seems to be operative is “one language-one community”. The key issue regarding the notion of speech community is determining and naming a speech community that operates with and uses two or more language.

Language as an act of identity

MEG – 04: ASPECTS OF LANGUAGE
ASSIGNMENT 2018 - 2019
(Based on Blocks (1 - 9)
          Max. Marks: 100

b. Language as an act of identity
A society consists of individuals and it cannot exist without individuals. According to Hudson, both sociologists and sociolinguistics would agreed that a society cannot exist without individuals rather individuals are center of interest of a society. To know about how the individuals behave it is necessary to know how they work. Therefore, it is essential to know that why individuals are given importance in sociolinguistics.

We can be sure that no two speakers have the same language because no two speakers have the same experience of language and differences lie between them because of the universal characteristics of a language.

Sociolinguistics and sociology of language

MEG – 04: ASPECTS OF LANGUAGE
ASSIGNMENT 2018 - 2019
(Based on Blocks (1 - 9)
          Max. Marks: 100

1. Write short notes on the following:

  1. Sociolinguistics and sociology of language

Sociolinguistics is the descriptive study of the effect of any and all aspects of society, including cultural norms, expectations, and context, on the way language is used, and society's effect on language. It differs from sociology of language, which focuses on the effect of language on society.

Sociolinguistics is meeting ground for both linguists and social scientists, it is not surprising that there are as it were, two centres of gravity, known as micro and macro sociolinguistics. These represent different orientation. Micro-issues concern the linguistic aspects of society and are taken up by linguists, dialectologists and others in language centred fields. Maro issues deal with understanding the social aspects of language and are major concern to sociologists and social psychologists. While the former is considered sociolinguistics, the latter falls in the realm of the sociology of language.

I wonder by my troth, what thou, and I Did, till we lov'd? were we not wean'd till then? But suck'd on countrey pleasures, childishly? Or snorted we i' the seaven sleepers den?

6.
I wonder by my troth, what thou, and I
Did, till we lov'd? were we not wean'd till then?
But suck'd on countrey pleasures, childishly?
Or snorted we i' the seaven sleepers den?

These lines are taken from John Donne’s poem, “The Good-Morrow”. He is the pioneer of the metaphysical movement in English literature in the first half of the 17th century. His poetry is expressive of intense personal emotions in a conversational idiom with detachment. The poem tell us about his metaphysic of love, the implication of which inheres in a close interdependence of body and spirit.

In the poem, “The Good-Morrow” he presents the love that is serene, and the equipoise reaches the culmination. The mood of happiness and security in love-making that the poem exalts is not done in the petrarchan mode of making an abject surrender. The poem begins in a highly dramatic manner with a disconnecting question...................................................

And thereupon That beautiful mild woman for whose sake There's many a one shall find out all heartache On finding that her voice is sweet and low Replied,'To be born woman is to kno,,rr- Although they do not talk of at school- That we must labour to be beautiful .'

MEG – 01: BRITISH POETRY
ASSIGNMENT 2018 - 2019
(Based on Blocks (1 - 9)
          Max. Marks: 100

5.

And thereupon
That beautiful mild woman for whose sake
There's many a one shall find out all heartache
On finding that her voice is sweet and low
Replied,'To be born woman is to kno,,rr-
Although they do not talk of at school-
That we must labour to be beautiful .'

These lines are taken from the poem ‘Adam’s Curse’ written by  William Butler Yeats. In the poem, Yeats describes the difficulty of creating something beautiful. The title alludes to the book of Genesis, evoking the fall of man and the separation of work and pleasure.

‘Adam’s Curse’ remains an important instance for a departure in Yeats's poetic career, an awareness of the actual world with its unpoetic responsibilities and political conflicts. It hovers between the earlier languorous idiom and rhythm and a new conversational, even witty tone disguising a sub-text of emotional yearning and disillusionment.
