Derivational Prefixes
There is a small set of affixes in English which are
attached at the beginning of a stem to modify its meaning. Some well-known
examples are the negative prefixes un-,in-, and dis-. But negation is not the
only modification of meaning the prefixes are used for.
Unlike most suffixes, the prefixes do not affect the
grammatical category of the stem at all. So the grammar-based system is of no
use. The change in meaning at least tells us exactly how the resulting word
differs in meaning form the stem.
